GERUND PHRASES AR, ER, IR. Introduction : The gerund ( gerundio ) is a special, invariable form of the verb which always ends in  -ndo  in Spanish, for example:  hablando ,  comiendo ,  viviendo . An alternate name for it is simply “the  -ndo  form”. In English it is translated as the “-ing” form of the verb (for example, “speaking”), which has lead to the frequent mistake of calling this form the “present participle”. The gerund is a verb form which has an adverbial function, not an adjectival function like a participle, nor a noun function like an infinitive. Forms : To form the gerund, remove the infinitive ending ( -ar ,  -er , or  -ir ) of a verb and add  -ando  for  -ar  verbs, and  -iendo  for  -er  and  -ir  verbs:      caminar  > caminando; volver > volviendo; abrir > abriendo . There are a few special cases: Verbs of the second and third conjugations for which the stem ends in a vowel, change the ending  -iendo  to  -yendo :  leer  > leyendo;  caer  >

Tema 2., Quantifiers Cuando se refiere a un sustantivo que es contable, no hay mucha diferencia entre el inglés y el español pero hay algunos puntos para recordar. 1. En español, en el singular 'un/una' puede ser el artículo del sustantivo o puede ser también el número. El inglés hace una diferencia entre el artículo del sustantivo y el número. Veamos algunos ejemplos: A cake – una torta (‘una’ es el artículo) One cake – una torta (en este caso ‘una’ significa el número de tortas) I have a cake in the kitchen – Tengo una torta en la cocina (artículo) I have only one cake in the kitchen – Tengo solo una torta en la cocina (número) He has a truck in his garage – Él tiene un camión en su garaje (artículo) He has one truck in his garage – Él tiene un camión en su garaje (número) Los cuantificadores indican la cantidad de un nombre. Muchas veces, mis estudiantes han aprendido que  en inglés, el futuro se hace con “will.”  Así de sencillo. Aunque es verdad que “will” es una forma de hablar del futuro, en realidad tenemos varios futuros. Hoy hablaremos de dos, que son muy diferentes. El otro futuro, algo más largo, es  going to  + infinitivo. Es muy importante saber la diferencia entre will y going to, y probablemente no es lo que piensas. Así pues, aquí tienes unos ejemplos… Cómo usar will y going to en inglés Este punto es muy importante: Going to se usa para hablar de intenciones y planes para el futuro.  Así diríamos: I’m going to make chicken for dinner. She’s going to visit her grandmother tomorrow. I’m going to look for a job as soon as I finish university. Las tres frases hablan de un plan. (Fíjate también que es necesario usar una forma del verbo to be ( am ,  is o  are ) antes. De la misma manera, usamos  going to + infinitivo  para preguntar sobre planes para el futuro:
